I'm a co-director and the CTO at OSDV, which means that I get to try to ride herd on tech efforts at OSDV, and also help with operations of the foundation.
I ve worked in the information technology business for over 25 years, starting as a software developer, and more recently as CTO in software companies. Both computing infrastructure and security have been a focus throughout, though in several roles: developer, executive, consultant, or program manager. Much of the time, my responsibility for execution has been as a contributor, leader, or manager. However, a significant part of time, I ve acted as a consultant, either as an employee of a company that provided services, or as an independent consultant.
One common theme is working on the arc from starting a development effort, through some experimental stages, to some form of adoption, commercialization, or other technology transfer. That theme applies to both typical start-up company work as well as a number of funded R&D projects I’ve led. Both types of effort are really all about technology, innovation, and experimentation to find out what works in the lab, and how it can be made useful outside the lab. That’s also the type of work that I get enthusiastic about doing with OSDV.
Before starting OSDV, I did independent consulting mostly related to systems design, or information security, ranging from technology strategy for technology vendors, to analysis and review for technology buyers and investors. I played a variety of roles like architect, designer, advisor, reviewer, and analyst for a variety of organizations ranging from technology start-up companies and venture capital firms to major government agencies and established financial services firms.
Employment highlights include CTO at Solidcore Systems (enterprise software); VP Strategy at Securify (IT security professional services); Technology Officer of Network Associates Labs (McAfee, enterprise security); and variety of consulting, development, and R&D management roles at commercial InfoSec pioneer Trusted Information Systems (TIS).
