Our high level concept is that while the TTV Tabulator is part of the certified election suite, it is not the be-all and end-all reporter and analyzer of the data. The Tabulators will be run on election day by election officials and generate mission critical real time reports and alerts 'in the heat of battle'. In contrast, the TTV Auditor is not part of the certified election suite and is not actually needed to conduct and an election and produce election results.

The TTV Auditor instead is run in the days (and weeks and months) following the election to retrospectively inspect and understand the results in depth and to follow up on any questions that might arise from election officials and/or citizens about the election.

Specifically, the auditor's job is to take the data sets created by all the other components of the TTV suite and facilitate deeper analysis of the results of an election, including for example:

multi dimensional, interactive reports of all the high level results of the vote
ability to drill down to the lowest level of detail, including looking at the scanned image of an individual cast ballot
support forensic and statistical analysis to detect and investigate surprising results

In contrast, the individual instances of the TTV Tabulator will generate standard reports sufficient to monitor at a high level that things are running smoothly as the election progresses, to catch problems during the actual election that can be addressed.
